How to Win the Google Map Pack: A Local SEO Checklist

The map pack sends more clicks than the organic results below it for most local searches. Here's how to earn a spot in it.

The three-pack of local results that appears above organic listings for searches like "plumber near me" or "dentist in Austin" is where most local clicks go. Ranking there depends on a different set of signals than traditional SEO. Here's the checklist we run for every local client.

1. Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile

Fill out every field: categories, service areas, business hours, attributes, and a keyword-natural business description. Profiles with complete information consistently outrank thinner listings, all else being equal.

2. Get your NAP consistent everywhere

Your Name, Address, and Phone number should match exactly across your website, Google Business Profile, and every directory (Yelp, Apple Maps, industry-specific directories). Inconsistencies confuse Google's confidence in your business's legitimacy.

3. Build local citations deliberately

  • General directories: Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Maps
  • Industry-specific directories relevant to your business
  • Local chamber of commerce and business association listings

4. Earn (and respond to) reviews consistently

Review count and velocity are ranking factors, but so is your response rate. A steady stream of new reviews, with thoughtful owner responses, signals an active, trustworthy business.

5. Create location-specific landing pages

If you serve multiple cities or neighborhoods, build a dedicated page for each with unique content, not a duplicated template with the city name swapped. Google can tell the difference.

6. Build local links

Sponsorships, local press mentions, and partnerships with nearby complementary businesses build the kind of local link profile that generic outreach can't replicate.

One of our clinic clients went from appearing in the map pack for 4 keywords to 38 within nine months, primarily by fixing citation consistency and building a genuine review cadence — no paid links required.

The takeaway

Local SEO rewards businesses that look verifiably real and active across the web, not just on their own website. Work through this checklist methodically, and the map pack becomes a realistic, compounding source of leads.
